FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SUMMIT INVITES APPLICANTS FOR ITS SHIRLEY WIGHT

KEENEY SCHOLARSHIPS

SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY, JANUARY 31, 2011 -- The Junior League of Summit is pleased to

invite local high school seniors to apply for its coveted Shirley Wight Keeney Scholarships. This year the

League is offering two $2,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The scholarships are open

to high school seniors who either reside in, or attend school within, the towns of Berkeley Heights, New

Providence, Chatham and Summit.

The scholarships’ namesake, Shirley Wight Keeney, was a beloved member of the Junior League

of Summit and the Summit community. Ms. Keeney was an active volunteer and truly demonstrated the

League’s Mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving

communities through effective action and leadership. Ms. Keeney’s volunteer work began when she was

as young as a preschooler. At the time, she worked with her mother in the Welfare Branch in the

Fortnightly Club helping to deliver food to the ill and those otherwise in need. In her tenure as the

President of the Junior League of Summit from 1953-1955, Ms. Keeney led the League as it established

the Summit Child Care Center (now the Learning Circle). She served as Executive Secretary for the

League for over 25 years and worked in the Second Time Around Thrift Shop up until her passing in April

of last year.

Ms. Keeney was recognized in 1989 by the Summit YWCA as being one of five “outstanding

Women of the Community.” In 1998 Congressman Bob Franks presented Ms. Keeney with a Certificate

of Special Congressional Recognition and Appreciation for her outstanding community contributions.

Interested scholarship candidates should likewise reflect Ms. Keeney’s dedication to community

service and show significant volunteer work during his or her high school years that align with the

League’s Mission. Moreover, it is recommended that applicants be in the top third of their graduating

class and plan to attend a two or four-year accredited college, university or business/vocational school.

Further information about the Shirley Wight Keeney Scholarship, and applications, are available on the

League’s website: https://www.jlsummit.org/?nd=scholarships2011. Applications are due to the League by

March 15, 2011.
